Eight people killed in charter plane crash in Alaska

Eight people were killed after a charter plane crashed near a remote radar site in western Alaska on Thursday, August 20.

The U.S. military said the incident occurred near the Cape Newenham Long Range Radar Site Airport, about 450 miles (725 kilometers) west of Anchorage.

Two pilots and six passengers were aboard the aircraft. It had departed from Anchorage and was headed to Cape Newenham when it crashed while approaching the airport.

The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center immediately launched a search-and-rescue operation after receiving a report of an aircraft incident near the radar site.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Robert Davis, commander of the Alaskan Command, described the crash as a devastating loss for the military community and the communities they serve.

Meanwhile, Clint Johnson, chief of the National Transportation Safety Board’s Alaska region, said the information gathered so far remains preliminary.
