Davao City fire incidents surge nearly 80% in 2026

Fire incidents in Davao City increased by nearly 80 percent in the first four months of 2026, prompting authorities to call for heightened public vigilance.

The Bureau of Fire Protection-Davao City Fire District (BFP-DCFD) reported a total of 429 fire incidents from Jan. 1 to April 28, 2026. This is significantly higher compared to 236 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.

Fire Senior Inspector Frances Mae Sendrijas, spokesperson of the DCFD, said most of the recorded incidents were classified as non-structural fires. These include fires involving grass, garbage and agricultural areas.

Of the total number, 103 cases involved residential fires, while 43 were classified as non-residential fires.

Sendrijas said extreme heat and lack of rainfall contributed to the rise in fire incidents. She noted that areas in the northern and southern parts of the city are particularly affected due to the presence of grasslands and agricultural zones.

Authorities warned that even small fires can spread quickly and pose risks to nearby homes if not immediately controlled.

The DCFD has intensified its campaign against open burning, which is prohibited under the Fire Code of the Philippines. Officials emphasized that improper disposal of waste and burning activities can trigger larger incidents.

Residents are urged to remain alert, practice proper waste disposal and report violations to authorities.

The BFP said community cooperation is essential in preventing further incidents, especially during periods of high temperature and dry conditions.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and are reinforcing safety measures to reduce fire risks across the city.
