Storm alert rises as LPA may become ‘Crising’ and slam Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao with torrential rain this weekend

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a storm warning for the entire country as a possible low-pressure area (LPA) is expected to form by midweek and may escalate into a tropical depression.

As of Monday, July 14, weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said cloud clusters hovering east of Visayas and Mindanao are being closely monitored for development. The potential LPA may form between Wednesday, July 16, and Thursday, July 17, increasing the likelihood of widespread rainfall.

Southern regions brace for intensified habagat

Even before the LPA fully forms, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to affect the western sections of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The southwest monsoon, locally called habagat, remains active and is pulling moisture from the surrounding seas, according to Villamil.

PAGASA explained that if the LPA moves westward over the Philippine landmass, it will enhance the southwest monsoon’s strength. This convergence may drench large swaths of the country beginning Wednesday, increasing the chances of flash floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.

From scattered showers to nationwide deluge

By Friday, July 18, the agency warns that the combined weather systems may trigger rainfall across all major island groups. Although it remains uncertain whether the LPA will intensify into a tropical depression, PAGASA already assigned the possible name “Crising” to the system.

Residents in low-lying and mountainous areas are being advised to take early precautions. According to Villamil, these regions face the highest risk of flooding or landslides if Crising forms and interacts with habagat.

PAGASA has not yet issued a storm signal, but its monitoring continues daily. The agency will confirm any storm classification and trajectory as early as Wednesday.

Local authorities are also being urged to prepare emergency response protocols. The potential weather disturbance comes as many communities are still recovering from seasonal flooding and ground instability.

With rainfall building up by the hour and monsoon winds strengthening, all eyes now turn toward the evolving weather pattern forming over Visayas and Mindanao.
