A 7-year-old boy from South Cotabato has tested positive for HIV, marking the youngest recorded case in the province according to the Integrated Provincial Health Office. IPHO Disease Prevention and Control Unit head John Arlo Codilla confirmed that the child is currently in recovery.
Codilla explained that initial findings did not show signs of mother to child transmission. Health officials believe the case may involve sexual transmission, which raised concerns of possible sexual abuse. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to determine how the minor contracted the virus.
From January to September this year, South Cotabato recorded 142 new HIV cases. Data from IPHO shows that 134 of these cases involve men, while 8 involve women, including four pregnant patients. The province also holds the highest number of HIV cases in Region 12 with a total of 1,278 recorded.
Treatment for HIV remains free in South Cotabato through testing facilities and Rural Health Units. Residents may undergo screening and seek medical care without charge.
The Provincial Health Office urged parents to watch over their children closely. Officials encouraged families to seek testing or consultation when needed, stressing that early intervention helps prevent further spread of the virus. The office assured the public that assistance is available for anyone requesting help or screening.
