Troops from the 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division uncovered an arms cache believed to belong to the New People’s Army during an operation in Surigao del Sur on March 11, 2026.
The cache was discovered at Sitio Lago in Barangay Carromata, San Miguel town.
Recovered items included an R4 rifle, ammunition, magazines, a bandolier, backpacks containing personal belongings, and documents described by the military as subversive materials.
The operation was carried out by troops from the 30th Infantry Battalion under the 401st Infantry Brigade as part of the 4ID’s intensified efforts to address security threats and protect communities in the Caraga region.
Lt. Col. Rey Vergel A. Annogui, commanding officer of the 30th Infantry Battalion, said the recovered war materiel were believed to belong to members of the dismantled SRSDG Westland unit of the Northeastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the NPA.
Annogui said the discovery deals a significant blow to the operational capability of remaining NPA members in the area.
He added that the seizure of weapons, ammunition, and documents disrupts the group’s ability to conduct attacks, recruit members, and plan activities.
The officer also said the development may encourage remaining NPA members to surrender and return to the government.
Meanwhile, 4th Infantry Division Commander Maj. Gen. Michele B. Anayron Jr. highlighted the role of local communities and former NPA members in providing information that led to the discovery.
Anayron said cooperation from residents remains crucial in strengthening security and supporting the government’s campaign to end insurgency in the region.
He added that the discovery of the arms cache weakens the NPA’s foothold and limits its ability to operate in Surigao del Sur and nearby provinces.
