396-year-old Dao Tree in Camarines Sur stands firm despite storms

A 396-year-old Dao Tree located at Tinawagan National High School in Tigaon, Camarines Sur remains sturdy despite enduring years of storms and natural disasters.

According to the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO), the ancient tree continues to stand firm and shows no visible damage, even after being exposed to multiple calamities.

Leandro Befinosa, the Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (LDRRM) Officer, said that while some factors could weaken the tree’s foundation, there are no signs of deterioration from its roots up to its canopy. The official emphasized that the Dao Tree remains in good condition based on their recent inspection.

In 2021, the tree gained national recognition after winning the Search for Heritage Trees in Public Schools organized by DepEd Tayo – Youth Formation. It was declared the oldest living tree found in any public school in the Philippines.

The Dao Tree has since become a symbol of resilience and pride for both the students and residents of Tigaon, standing as a living witness to centuries of history and changing times.

Local authorities continue to monitor the site to ensure the preservation and safety of one of Bicol’s oldest natural landmarks.
