(UPDATE) Three people were confirmed dead and six others were injured in a shooting at Banga National High School in Banga, South Cotabato, shortly after 1 p.m. Friday.
South Cotabato Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office chief Rolly Doane Aquino said the fatalities included the suspected gunman. Authorities continue to monitor the condition of other victims who were brought to different hospitals in the province.
According to information obtained by Brigada News FM Koronadal, the injured individuals were reportedly 14 years old.
The suspected shooter was identified as a Grade 11 student who allegedly used a 9mm firearm in the incident.
Classes were immediately suspended in the municipality of Banga following the shooting. The neighboring municipality of Surallah also suspended classes because of the incident.
South Cotabato Gov. Reynaldo Tamayo Jr. described the incident as an isolated case and appealed to the public to remain calm while police conduct an extensive investigation.
Tamayo also assured that the victims would receive assistance.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the identities of those who died or were injured.
The incident prompted concern among the local community as officials continued to assess the situation and monitor the victims receiving medical treatment.
The investigation remains ongoing, while authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting at the school.
