23 WWII Japanese Navy bombs discovered in Davao City

Authorities safely recovered unexploded explosive ordnance (UXO) after World War II-era bombs were discovered in Barangay Buhangin, Davao City, officials said.

The explosives were found on Jan. 24, 2026, in Purok Balite, prompting an immediate response from military and law enforcement units. The ordnance was already in a deteriorating condition and was considered a serious threat to residents, nearby properties, and the surrounding environment.

Following the discovery, the area was immediately secured to prevent harm to the local population. A technical inspection confirmed that the recovered UXO consisted of 23 bombs identified as Type 99, Nr 3, Mark 3, with each weighing about 32 kilograms. Authorities said the explosives were Japanese Navy bombs dating back to World War II.

A recovery operation was then carried out to safely remove the hazardous materials from the community. Officials said the mission was completed swiftly while maintaining strict safety measures.

The operation was led by MSg Jonhmar Sudio, platoon sergeant, and Sgt. Ryan Vilando, an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) specialist from the 3rd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Platoon of the 2nd EOD Company, EOD Battalion, SPTCOM, Philippine Army.

The recovery was conducted in collaboration with AFP K9 units, Task Force Davao, and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Region XI.

Authorities credited the precision, discipline, and expertise of the responding EOD personnel for ensuring the safe removal of the explosives.

Officials said the successful recovery reflects the core mission of the EOD Battalion in protecting communities and safeguarding lives and property from explosive hazards.

The operation also highlighted continued cooperation among government security forces and stakeholders in promoting peace, safety, and community resilience in Davao City.

Residents were reminded to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects to authorities to prevent potential danger.
