14-year-old behind Davao City school bomb threats

Police in Davao City have identified a 14-year-old student as the person behind the bomb threats that caused panic and forced the suspension of classes in several schools.

The Talomo Police Station reported that the minor is a Grade 9 student from Km 7, Matina. Authorities said his cellphone contained several fake Facebook accounts used to spread the threats online.

One post read, “TAPOK SAMO KAY GITAMNAN NANAKOG LANDMINE INYONG FIELD KARONG GABIUNA,” which translates to “Gather together because I planted landmines in your field last night.”

The message, paired with a photo of students during a flag ceremony, caused fear among parents and school officials.

Police said no explosives were found after clearing operations in four schools, but classes were canceled that day to ensure the safety of students and staff.

Under Republic Act 9344 or the Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act of 2006, the minor cannot be criminally charged or imprisoned.

Social workers are set to conduct home visits and counseling for the boy as part of his rehabilitation.

Authorities reminded the public that hoax threats can cause serious disruption and urged parents to closely monitor their children’s online activities.
