1-month-old baby killed by mother in Davao del Sur; police probe drug use

A one-month-old infant died after allegedly being strangled and slammed onto a bed by the child’s mother in Purok Adelfa, Barangay Tres de Mayo, Digos City, Davao del Sur on Sunday, June 21.

Police Lt. Col. Norman Yparraguirre, chief of the Digos City Police Station, said the incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m.

According to information provided to Brigada News FM Davao, witnesses reported hearing the infant crying loudly while the alleged assault was taking place inside the residence.

Neighbors attempted to rescue the child after becoming aware of the situation. However, the infant reportedly sustained fatal injuries and was declared dead.

Authorities identified the child’s mother as the primary suspect in the incident. She was subsequently taken into police custody.

Yparraguirre said the suspect had allegedly argued with her live-in partner before the incident. According to the police investigation, the disagreement reportedly stemmed from the suspect’s request for money to purchase alcoholic beverages, which was denied.

Police said the infant became the victim following the argument.

Investigators are also looking into the possibility that the suspect had used illegal drugs before the incident occurred.

As of this writing, authorities have not released additional details regarding the results of any examination related to the alleged drug use.

The investigation remains ongoing as police gather further evidence and statements from witnesses.
