West Philippine Sea vanishes from Google Maps

The name “West Philippine Sea” is no longer visible on Google Maps, one of the world’s most used mapping platforms, as of April 30, 2025. Only “South China Sea” remains labeled, while the previously pinned “West Philippine Sea” has been removed without explanation.

ACT-CIS Representative Erwin Tulfo immediately took to Facebook, questioning the tech giant’s move: “BAKIT GOOGLE???!!! Inalis na ng Google ang West Philippine Sea sa mapa nito at pinalitan muli ng South China Sea. Are you afraid google??? I think so…”

The issue has previously sparked strong reactions from national leaders and agencies. When “West Philippine Sea” was still visible on the platform, several officials praised the move.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez earlier said, “It is a symbolic and moral victory,” while AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla noted, “This affirms international recognition of the country’s sovereign rights.”

Presidential Press Officer Claire Castro also commented before that the presence of “West Philippine Sea” on Google Maps affirms Philippine territory.

As of writing, the label remains missing, and Google has yet to issue any official statement.
