The UP Broadcasting Association expressed concern over the political decision of its alumna, Senator Loren Legarda, saying it appeared inconsistent with the principles of accountability, public service, and democratic responsibility taught to students of the University of the Philippines.
The statement came after Legarda joined the newly formed majority bloc in the Senate of the Philippines, which also saw Senator Alan Peter Cayetano replace Senator Tito Sotto as Senate President.
According to the association, the developments marked a “decisive political moment” as the Senate prepares to receive the Articles of Impeachment against Vice President Sara Duterte over allegations of grave misuse of public funds and betrayal of public trust.
The group said concerns have emerged under Cayetano’s leadership in the Senate, noting his known alliance with the Duterte camp, with fears that the chamber’s leadership change could weaken, delay, or derail the impeachment process.
In its statement, the UP Broadcasting Association challenged Legarda to reflect on the values she once stood for to ensure that the Senate would not become a “sanctuary of impunity” or a “bargaining table” for political dynasties seeking to preserve their power.
The association added that Filipinos deserve institutions that act with integrity and officials who prioritize democratic duty over political accommodation.
