Tropical Cyclone Nika expected to bring intense rain and flooding risk in Northern Luzon, PAGASA warns

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has issued a warning about Tropical Cyclone Nika, which is expected to bring heavy torrential rainfall across Northern Luzon in the coming days. In its latest advisory, PAGASA outlined a forecast that includes intense downpours and heightened flood risks in mountainous and low-lying regions.

The weather advisory, released at 11 a.m. on November 9, predicts that from Sunday afternoon to Monday, regions including Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, and Catanduanes will experience moderate to heavy rainfall, with an estimated accumulation of 50 to 100 millimeters. As the cyclone advances, rainfall is expected to intensify further by Monday noon.

Intense to Torrential Rainfall Expected in Cagayan, Apayao, and Isabela

PAGASA forecasts that areas such as Cagayan, Apayao, and Isabela could face torrential rainfall exceeding 200 millimeters by Monday noon through Tuesday noon. In surrounding regions like Abra, Kalinga, Mountain Province, and Aurora, heavy to intense rain between 100 and 200 millimeters is anticipated. Meanwhile, Ifugao and Quirino can expect moderate to heavy rains of 50 to 100 millimeters.

PAGASA also cautioned that areas with mountainous terrain may experience higher rainfall accumulations, potentially worsening flooding risks. Recent rains have already saturated soil in some locations, which may further amplify the impacts of Cyclone Nika’s expected deluge.

Public Urged to Take Precautions as Flood Risks Rise

With forecasts of significant rainfall and potential flooding, PAGASA advises the public and local disaster risk reduction offices to implement necessary measures to protect lives and property. The agency’s regional services divisions are prepared to release localized rainfall and thunderstorm advisories to provide real-time updates to affected areas.

PAGASA has scheduled the next weather update for 5:00 p.m. today unless significant changes in the cyclone’s trajectory or intensity occur.
