Southwest Monsoon season officially ends — PAGASA

The Southwest Monsoon, or Habagat, season in the Philippines has officially ended this Monday, October 5, according to the Department of Science and Technology-Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

DOST-PAGASA said the declaration was based on several observed changes in the country’s prevailing weather patterns, including the weakening of winds and a decrease in rainfall associated with the Southwest Monsoon.

The agency also noted the strengthening of the high-pressure system over East Asia and the southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, or ITCZ.

According to PAGASA, these conditions are expected to persist in the coming days, prompting the official end of the Habagat season.

The declaration also marks the termination of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.

Meanwhile, PAGASA said it will continue to monitor the country’s weather and climate conditions and urged the public and concerned agencies to regularly check official weather updates.

Despite the end of the Habagat season, the country is still expected to experience the effects of Super El Niño in the coming months, particularly on agriculture and water supply.
