Tropical Storm Nika has intensified into a severe tropical storm and is undergoing rapid intensification, according to the latest advisory from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA). Located approximately 690 kilometers east of Infanta, Quezon, Nika is advancing west-northwestward at a speed of 30 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and gusts reaching up to 125 km/h.
Luzon on Alert as Nika Approaches
With its current path, Severe Tropical Storm Nika is expected to make landfall over Isabela or Aurora provinces by the afternoon of November 11. The storm is predicted to reach its peak intensity before landfall and may even strengthen to a typhoon level. Although some weakening may occur as it interacts with the Luzon landmass, Nika is forecasted to remain a severe tropical storm as it exits into the West Philippine Sea.
PAGASA has issued Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2, warning of gale-force winds for parts of Isabela and Aurora. Meanwhile, TCWS No. 1 is in effect over areas including Cagayan, Nueva Ecija, Quirino, Mountain Province, Ifugao, and parts of Quezon and Bicol regions. Coastal residents and mariners have been advised to remain on high alert as strong winds and rough seas could impact various regions, especially on the eastern seaboard.
Heavy Rainfall, Coastal Flooding, and Strong Winds Expected
Heavy rainfall warnings are in effect, with PAGASA forecasting intense to torrential rainfall in parts of Cagayan and Isabela on November 11 and 12. Minor to moderate impacts from strong winds are anticipated across affected areas. Coastal regions in Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Cagayan, Aurora, and Quezon may experience minimal to moderate storm surge, posing additional risks to low-lying areas.
As Severe Tropical Storm Nika approaches, authorities urge residents to heed local advisories and prepare for possible evacuations. Fisherfolk and those with smaller sea vessels are advised to avoid sailing in affected coastal waters due to hazardous sea conditions. PAGASA will continue to issue updates as the storm progresses.
