Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa has filed a measure seeking the reimposition of the death penalty for individuals convicted of plunder, stressing the urgency of passing the bill as corruption controversies mount.
Dela Rosa said the proposal is timely as the country continues to face multiple revelations of alleged irregularities in government flood control projects. He emphasized that plunder is not just a financial crime but also a betrayal of the public’s trust.
Under the proposed bill, plunder would be treated as a serious and grave offense deserving of the harshest punishment available. Dela Rosa argued that holding accountable those who commit large-scale corruption is necessary to restore confidence in government institutions.
“Plunder is a betrayal of the people’s trust,” the senator said, underscoring that the proposed measure aims to serve as both a deterrent and a form of justice.
Dela Rosa also appealed to the public to support the legislation, noting that widespread backing will help ensure the measure’s passage in Congress. He maintained that the country needs stronger laws to address corruption, which has long been a recurring issue in public works and infrastructure projects.
