The Davao City Fire District reported a 134% increase in rubbish and grass fire incidents in Davao City this year.
During a media briefing on April 29, DCFD Spokesperson Frances Marie Sendrijas confirmed the sharp rise in recorded fire incidents.
She said authorities have documented 265 cases from January to the present, significantly higher than the 113 incidents recorded last year.
The data reflects a concerning trend in fire-related emergencies, particularly those linked to human activities in residential and open areas.
Sendrijas identified improper waste disposal practices, especially the open burning of garbage in neighborhoods, as a primary cause of incidents.
She emphasized that careless burning can easily spread, especially during dry conditions, increasing the risk of larger and more destructive fires.
Authorities warned that these fires not only threaten homes and properties but also pose serious health risks due to smoke exposure.
Environmental damage also remains a major concern, as repeated burning contributes to air pollution and degradation of surrounding ecosystems.
In response, the DCFD urged residents to strictly avoid open burning and instead follow proper waste management practices at all times.
The agency stressed that community cooperation plays a crucial role in preventing fire outbreaks and ensuring public safety across the city.
