Rioters ordered to clean canals after People’s Park brawl in Samal Island

Individuals involved in a brawl that occurred at People’s Park during the celebration of the 28th Araw ng Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte are now performing community service following an order from Mayor Lemuel “Toto” Reyes.

The incident took place on March 7, 2026, in Barangay Peñaplata during a public event held as part of the city’s anniversary celebration.

Videos circulating online showed several young men involved in a physical altercation. In the footage, at least 10 individuals were seen exchanging punches and throwing chairs at each other.

One individual was also seen being struck with a bottle and repeatedly beaten during the incident.

Authorities said the individuals involved had reportedly been drinking before the fight broke out.

Following the incident, Mayor Reyes called on those involved to appear before authorities and take responsibility for their actions.

As part of the directive issued by the mayor, the individuals are now rendering community service.

They were assigned to clean waterways and drainage canals at the Public Market and within the People’s Park area.

City officials said the activity aims to serve as a form of accountability for those involved in the disturbance.

The city government said the initiative also promotes discipline, responsibility, and active participation in maintaining the cleanliness of public spaces.

Local authorities reiterated their commitment to maintaining peace and order in the city.

Officials also encouraged residents to take part in efforts that promote community responsibility and cooperation.

The city government said corrective actions such as community service can help ensure that incidents like the People’s Park brawl do not happen again.
