The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) expressed condolences following the deaths of two student athletes from Ateneo de Manila University during a reported team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.
The victims were identified as Divine Adili, 21, and Rene Clert Baterbonia, 19.
In a statement, the PSC said it stands with the families and loved ones of the two athletes as they mourn their loss.
The commission also emphasized that it is cooperating with the ongoing investigation into the incident, as well as with the efforts of the Philippine National Police and the Department of Justice.
According to the PSC, its participation in the investigation aims to help establish a clear, accurate and comprehensive understanding of what transpired during the activity in Aurora.
The agency said it supports efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths while authorities continue gathering information related to the incident.
Beyond the investigation, the PSC said it plans to review existing policies, protocols and training practices related to athletic programs and activities. The agency noted that the review is intended to identify measures that could strengthen oversight and safety within athletic training environments.
The commission stated that its objective is not only to understand the incident but also to ensure that lessons learned from the case contribute to improvements in athlete protection and welfare.
According to the PSC, the goal is to help develop a safer and more responsive system for athletes while maintaining standards for high-performance sports.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the facts surrounding the deaths of the two student athletes. The PSC said it will continue to coordinate with concerned agencies as the inquiry progresses.
