The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) has formally submitted the tax records of Vice President Sara Duterte to the Senate impeachment court after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. authorized their release.
The documents were delivered to the office of Senate Secretary and Clerk of Court Atty. Renato Bantug Jr., where they were officially received as part of the impeachment proceedings.
In addition to the vice president’s tax records, the impeachment court also received the subpoenaed tax documents of her husband, Mans Carpio, as well as records covering 19 corporate entities and one partnership.
The records were placed inside red boxes labeled with corresponding annexes before being turned over to the Senate.
The submission followed an earlier ruling by the impeachment court allowing the issuance of subpoenas for the documents.
According to the court, its decision was based on the legal reasoning and jurisprudential basis established in the Dipad v. Spouses Olivan case.
The impeachment court also stated that it has the constitutional authority to compel the production of evidence necessary for the proceedings.
However, the court recognized that the BIR commissioner could seek authorization from the President before releasing the requested tax records.
Following that authorization from President Marcos, the BIR proceeded with the formal submission of the documents to the impeachment court.
The tax records will now form part of the documentary evidence available to the Senate as it continues the impeachment proceedings involving Vice President Duterte.
Neither the Senate impeachment court nor the BIR disclosed additional details regarding the contents of the submitted tax records.
The turnover marks the latest development in the impeachment proceedings after the court ordered the production of the subpoenaed tax documents and the executive branch granted the necessary authorization for their release.
