President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Monday delivered a major educational and digital infrastructure boost to students in conflict-affected Marawi City by personally donating Starlink internet kits and school supplies to learners in Temporary Learning Spaces (TLS).
Marcos visited Barangay Sagonsongan, where five TLS sites are currently supporting over 720 students. These emergency learning facilities were established following the 2017 Marawi siege to ensure continuity of education for displaced learners.
During his visit, the President oversaw the installation of a Starlink satellite internet unit—his personal donation—at the learning site. According to the Office of the President, four more Starlink units will be distributed to Bangon Elementary School, Bacarat National High School, Angoyao National High School, and Cabasaran Primary School.
Digital access for remote learners
The deployment of Starlink satellite internet in Marawi is part of the government’s broader strategy to improve digital infrastructure in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas. Marcos emphasized that expanding internet access in these regions is critical to ensuring equal learning opportunities across the country.
To complement the internet connectivity efforts, the Office of the President also handed out school bags containing basic educational supplies to all students currently enrolled in the TLS system.
President Marcos reiterated the need to bridge the digital divide in areas that have historically lacked access to essential educational tools. His administration is working closely with local officials and education stakeholders to upgrade connectivity and learning environments in rural and conflict-stricken communities.
Follow-up inspections underway
In addition to the educational component of his visit, Marcos is expected to inspect other infrastructure in the city, including healthcare and transportation facilities. His engagements aim to ensure that recovery and development efforts in Marawi remain aligned with national goals.
The initiative aligns with the government’s long-term digital infrastructure program, which focuses on improving internet access to support inclusive growth and social equity. Starlink, a satellite internet system developed by SpaceX, is seen as a reliable connectivity solution for remote schools where traditional telecom services remain unreliable or unavailable.
Broader government goal
By prioritizing both education and digital connectivity in regions like Marawi, Marcos is reaffirming his administration’s commitment to a resilient, inclusive, and technology-driven education system. Officials said the President’s goal is to create a level playing field for students, regardless of their location.
The government plans to expand this model to other underserved areas nationwide, furthering the vision of a connected and future-ready Philippines.
