A 17-year-old pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed in a road crash late at night on Good Friday, April 18, in Alabel, Sarangani Province.
The victim, identified as Mariel Lumbos, died after the tricycle she was riding with her husband was hit by a car in front of the Alabel Provincial Hospital around 11 p.m.
According to the victim’s uncle, Mariel was being rushed to the hospital to give birth when the crash occurred. Due to the force of the impact, she was thrown through the windshield of the car. Her husband, Leonardo Lumbos, survived the incident.
A progress report from the Alabel Police Station confirmed that three people died in the crash, including Mariel and her unborn child. Four others were reported injured.
The victim’s family confirmed that they did not file a legal case against the driver. Instead, they reached a settlement amounting to ₱80,000. They have since requested additional compensation, citing the death of the unborn child.
The tragic incident occurred during the observance of Holy Week, a period when many Filipinos travel or return to their provinces.
Police are continuing to monitor the case, although no charges have been filed as of this writing.
