Viggo, the Philippine Eagle featured on the ₱1,000 polymer bill, celebrates his 15th hatch day as one of the permanent residents of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF).
Born in captivity, Viggo is part of the PEF’s breeding program, playing a vital role in efforts to conserve his critically endangered species. He shares a duplex enclosure with another eagle, Marikit, in hopes of increasing their population.
The Philippine Eagle’s image on the country’s highest-denomination bill serves as a powerful reminder of the species’ importance. However, despite conservation efforts, the wild population continues to decline due to deforestation. Estimates show that only 392 pairs remain in their natural habitat, while just 30 have been bred in captivity.
The PEF continues to push for stronger conservation programs, urging the public to support efforts to protect the country’s national bird.
