The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Wednesday, October 29, slammed Cavite 4th District Representative Francisco “Kiko” Barzaga’s call to abolish the agency, calling his remarks “unfair”.
PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said Barzaga’s claim was unfair to the “dedicated men and women” of the organization.
She emphasized that the Coast Guard upholds professionalism, discipline, and accountability in all its operations.
Cayabyab said the PCG operates under civilian oversight and full transparency. Thus, she assured that the command investigates any credible allegation of misconduct through due process.
Barzaga earlier accused the PCG of “escalating tensions” in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) and pursuing an “idiotic goal” of interfering in China and Taiwan’s “eventual reunification.”
He also claimed that the Coast Guard could trigger World War III.
Cayabyab said the PCG respects the right of lawmakers to voice opinions but urged them to engage in constructive dialogue instead of issuing baseless accusations.
She added that the PCG remains open to discussions with Barzaga and other members of Congress to clarify misconceptions and strengthen cooperation on maritime safety and security.
Barzaga also accused the PCG of corruption, alleging that officials granted high-ranking positions to “undeserving” political leaders, including former House Speaker and Leyte Representative Martin Romualdez and Presidential Adviser on Poverty Alleviation Larry Gadon.
Cayabyab clarified that the PCG and the PCG Auxiliary (PCGA) are separate organizations.
She explained that the PCGA is composed of civilian volunteers who assist in humanitarian and community-based missions.
Cayabyab added that honorary ranks in the auxiliary do not grant authority or compensation.
Meanwhile, she affirmed that the Coast Guard continues to protect lives, uphold maritime law, and secure Philippine waters with integrity, courage, and commitment to public service.*
