PCG clarifies none of those arrested over alleged Chinese espionage are its personnel

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) maintained that none of those arrested for allegedly spying for China are members of the agency.

Earlier, national security officials reported that three Filipinos were arrested by authorities for allegedly carrying out espionage activities for China.

Officials also said that the suspects were linked to personnel working with the Department of National Defense, the Philippine Navy, and the Philippine Coast Guard.

However, PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, Jay Tarriela, clarified that the National Security Council (NSC) only stated that one of the suspects was a person “close to” the PCG.

Tarriela explained that this means the individual is not a literal member of the PCG and is also not part of the West Philippine Sea Transparency Group.
