Weak internet connectivity remains a widespread issue in the Philippines, affecting both urban and rural areas. Even in cities, internet service can be unreliable, making access even more difficult in remote communities.
To address this, PhilTower, an independent tower company registered under the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), will roll out a P390-million project in Himamaylan to strengthen internet connectivity in the city and nearby areas.
Himamaylan Mayor Rogelio Raymund Tongson confirmed in an interview with Brigada News FM Kabankalan on Tuesday, February 5, that the city signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on January 23, 2025.
In the coming months, the company will finalize mapping efforts before starting tower installations.
The project aims to improve internet connectivity across different networks, particularly in remote areas. Among the 32 towns and cities in Negros Occidental, Himamaylan became the first beneficiary based on recommendations from DICT and the Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA).
Mayor Tongson assured residents that the new towers will be placed in barangays without causing space or health concerns.
By 2025, PhilTower plans to build thousands of towers nationwide to meet the growing demand for stronger internet connectivity. The company will invest around $150 million in capital expenditures to bring these projects to life.
