Imee Marcos questions President’s ‘don’t panic’ remark

Sen. Imee Marcos criticized her brother, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., over his statement that Filipinos should not panic about the Philippine peso’s continued decline against the U.S. dollar.

In a Facebook post, the senator shared a news report about the president’s remarks, adding the sarcastic question, “So ano dapat? Party-party???”

The president had earlier urged the public not to panic over the weakening peso, which he linked to rising oil prices and their effects on the economy.

He also assured the public that the government had the necessary means to defend the peso against the dollar.

The senator’s post came as the Philippine currency recorded another historic low.

On Oct. 26, the peso weakened to ₱63.95 per U.S. dollar, surpassing its previous record low of ₱63.615 recorded on Oct. 23.

The currency’s continued depreciation has drawn attention to the economic pressures associated with its declining value.

While Marcos Jr. emphasized the need to avoid panic and assured the public of the government’s ability to defend the currency, Imee questioned the tone of his message through her social media post.

The exchange highlighted differing public messaging between the siblings amid the peso’s continued decline.

The original report did not provide further details about the government’s specific measures to support the peso or any additional response from the president to the senator’s remarks.
