Netherlands backs removal of ICC prosecutor Karim Khan

The Dutch government has announced its support for the removal of International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor Karim Khan following findings related to a sexual misconduct case.

In a letter submitted to the Dutch Parliament, the country’s ministers of justice and foreign affairs said the Netherlands would vote in favor of Khan’s removal during a special session of the ICC’s 125 member states scheduled for next week.

The decision followed a recommendation from the court’s oversight body, which concluded that Khan committed serious misconduct after becoming involved in what it described as an inappropriate relationship with a junior staff member.

Based on the recommendation, the Dutch government said it would support efforts to remove Khan from his position as the ICC’s chief prosecutor.

Khan has denied the allegations against him and maintained that his suspension is unlawful.

A vote on his future as ICC prosecutor is scheduled for July 24, when the court’s member states are expected to decide whether he should be removed from office.

The outcome of the vote will determine whether Khan remains in his post following the findings of the misconduct investigation.

The Netherlands’ announcement comes ahead of the special session, where member states will consider the recommendation concerning Khan’s position at the international tribunal.

Khan continues to dispute the allegations and the legality of the action taken against him, while member states prepare to cast their votes on his status as prosecutor. The decision is expected to be made during the scheduled meeting on July 24.
