The Western Mindanao Naval Command (WMNC) seized a massive shipment of smuggled goods off the coast of Sitangkai, Tawi-Tawi, on Monday, September 29, with authorities estimating the contraband to be worth millions of pesos.
WMNC commander Rear Admiral Constancio Arturo Reyes Jr. confirmed the seizure, saying that the goods were intercepted near Pandukan Island, Pangutaran, Sulu, during a routine maritime patrol.
The crew of the BRP Juan Magluyan (PC-392) spotted a wooden-hulled vessel named M/L Fatima Radzna-Juliet anchored in a lagoon, prompting them to conduct an inspection, he said.
Upon boarding the vessel, authorities found it loaded with a variety of contraband items, including 3,000 sacks of rice, 400 bags of refined sugar, 200 boxes of biscuits, 300 boxes of noodles, and 100 cases of bottled water. Additionally, two boxes of coffee and two boxes of soy sauce were discovered. The vessel was manned by a 10-person crew.
WMNC personnel suspect that some of the goods may have already been unloaded when the ship was intercepted, as the vessel had been anchored in a lagoon at the time of the operation.
The vessel, along with its illicit cargo, was escorted to Naval Station Romulo Espaldon in Zamboanga City for processing.
Authorities coordinated with relevant government agencies for the turnover of the seized goods, while investigations into the smuggling network behind the operation continue.*
