The MVP Sports Foundation (MVPSF) clarified that it neither owns nor manages the Ateneo de Manila University men’s basketball team.
The statement came after the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) announced that it would issue subpoenas to Smart Communications officials as part of the investigation into the deaths of two student-athletes.
In a statement, MVPSF President Alfredo Panlilio said the foundation’s role is limited to providing funding support for the Ateneo Blue Eagles.
He emphasized that the foundation does not handle the management of the team’s program, athletes, coaching staff, recruitment, or player development.
Panlilio also clarified that Epok Quimpo, an employee of Smart Communications, served as team manager of the Ateneo men’s basketball team in his personal capacity as an Ateneo alumnus and former player.
In closing, the MVPSF said it stands with Filipinos not only in mourning the deaths of athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, but also in seeking the truth behind the tragedy.
It may be recalled that both Quimpo and head coach Tab Baldwin have already submitted their resignations amid the controversy.
