Senator Robin Padilla was unable to submit his counter-affidavit during the first preliminary investigation of the obstruction of justice complaint filed against him before the Department of Justice on Sept. 25.
The DOJ panel of prosecutors noted that the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) still had additional documents to submit as part of the complaint. The panel directed the police unit to provide the missing requirements before the proceedings continue.
Padilla personally attended the hearing but declined to discuss details afterward, saying he would follow the law. Supporters also gathered outside the DOJ to show support for the senator.
The complaint against Padilla involves allegations that he helped Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa leave the Senate premises on May 14 while authorities were attempting to serve an International Criminal Court arrest warrant against Dela Rosa.
Padilla has acknowledged that Dela Rosa rode in his vehicle but has denied helping him evade arrest. The DOJ has stressed that the issuance of a subpoena is not a finding of guilt and that the case remains under preliminary investigation.
The next preliminary investigation is scheduled for Oct. 9. Padilla’s counter-affidavit is set to be submitted on Nov. 12, while his lawyers are expected to represent him at the next hearing.
