A meteor shower reportedly spotted in Soccsksargen went viral early in the morning, just after 1:00 AM, on December 4, 2024. Netizens quickly took notice of the event and shared it widely online.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) released a statement clarifying that this was not a meteor shower, but rather debris from the launch of China’s Long March 3B rocket.
In connection with this, PhilSA had earlier issued an advisory on the afternoon of December 3, 2024, regarding the rocket launch at the Xichang Satellite Launch Center, warning concerned government agencies and authorities to be vigilant about any potential threats.
According to PhilSa, the debris observed was about 12 nautical miles away from Rozul Reef and 151 nautical miles away from Busuanga in Palawan.
PhilSa also explained that they do not expect the debris to hit the ground and assured that it will not pose a threat to ships, planes, fishing boats, or other vessels in the area.
Authorities have advised residents, especially in coastal areas, to avoid approaching the debris, as it may contain remnants of toxic substances such as rocket fuel.
