A man allegedly hacked his elderly parents to death with a machete in Malungon, Sarangani Province, on May 1, 2025, around 8:00 a.m., police said.
According to Police Lt. Col. Geovanni Ladeo, chief of the Malungon Municipal Police Station, the victims—identified as Aliman, 84, and his wife Laona, 79—were on their way to farm in Sitio Nian, Barangay Tamban, when they were attacked by their 36-year-old son, Noel.
Unaware they were being followed, the elderly couple was allegedly struck from behind by their son, who inflicted deep machete wounds to their necks. Both victims died on the spot.
Initial police investigation suggests that the suspect was suffering from depression after his wife left him. Another possible motive being investigated is Noel’s alleged resentment toward his parents for not financially supporting him.
After the brutal killing, Noel reportedly surrendered to the Philippine Army detachment in Barangay Malinis. Authorities said he expressed regret over the incident and admitted to the crime.
Noel is currently detained at the Malungon Police Station. His sibling is expected to file criminal charges against him.
Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing while also considering psychological factors behind the suspect’s actions.
