Several lawmakers have criticized Vice President Sara Duterte’s declaration that she intends to run for president in 2028, calling the move premature and politically motivated.
Kabataan Party-list Rep. Renee Louise Co said the announcement appears “desperate,” arguing that the vice president should first address allegations surrounding the alleged misuse of public funds. Co also questioned Duterte’s record in office, claiming the vice president has taken extended breaks during the first half of her term.
The lawmaker said the early declaration could serve as a distraction from issues related to the use of confidential funds. She added that the public deserves clear answers regarding how government resources were spent.
House Deputy Minority Leader Antonio Tinio echoed the criticism, saying the vice president’s statement was not surprising. Tinio said it appears Duterte has been focused on positioning herself for the 2028 presidential race.
He also suggested the early announcement may be intended to pressure members of Congress by signaling a future presidential run, possibly influencing decisions on impeachment complaints. Tinio said such a strategy would not deter lawmakers from pursuing accountability, adding that public calls for answers remain strong.
Despite the political tensions, Tinio emphasized that impeachment proceedings against the vice president will continue. He noted that three impeachment complaints have yet to be referred to the House Committee on Justice.
According to Tinio, procedural rules must be followed before the complaints can be formally transmitted, in order to avoid legal challenges similar to past petitions brought before the Supreme Court.
