Karl Stefanovic and his wife, Jasmine, are facing mounting pressure as their multimillion-dollar mansion build in Sydney’s exclusive North Shore spirals beyond its original budget. The Today host, 50, and his wife, 40, had envisioned a dream home, but before construction has even started, the couple is already dealing with financial strain and rising tensions.
An insider revealed that the project, originally expected to take just over a year, could now stretch to more than two years. With escalating costs, Stefanovic is reportedly feeling the heat.
“It’s only early days, and before a single brick has been laid, there’s already pressure—especially on Karl—with budget blowouts,” a source told Woman’s Day.
Mansion costs soar as financial strain grows
The couple purchased their 1960s home in Castlecrag in early 2021 for $3.2 million, only to demolish it for $100,000 before committing to a staggering $5 million rebuild. The grand plans for a four-story, five-bedroom mansion have left many questioning whether the pair has taken on more than they can handle.
“Karl earns a rumored $2 million a year, but that can only go so far,” the insider noted. “They’re still covering the costs of their $4 million Noosa beach house, and now they’re pouring millions more into this project.”
Critics have pointed out that the investment seems excessive for a home that will only house the couple and their young daughter, Harper. The financial strain has reportedly led to disagreements between Karl and Jasmine, marking one of the few times they haven’t seen eye to eye in their six-year marriage.
Karl’s career uncertainty adds to the pressure
Adding to the tension, Stefanovic is facing uncertainty at Nine News, with reports that network executives are tightening restrictions on high-profile presenters.
Concerns arose after Today sports presenter Alex Cullen was abruptly stood down during the Australian Open for accepting a $50,000 prize from billionaire Adrian Portelli. The controversy also put Stefanovic in the spotlight, as he had jokingly suggested splitting the prize with Cullen if Portelli followed through.
While the money was later donated to charity, the scandal has reportedly made Nine News management crack down on off-air earnings, sponsorships, and side deals.
“What it has done is made Nine’s new bosses tighten the reins,” the insider revealed. “Any of Karl’s side hustles outside his contractual obligations could soon be banned, which could put him under even more financial strain.”
With construction delays potentially extending the build to two years, the couple is also spending $3,000 a week renting a luxury four-bedroom home, adding another estimated $70,000 in temporary housing costs.
As Karl navigates career pressures and budget concerns, the once-exciting dream home project is quickly turning into a financial and emotional burden.
