Japan to fund P8-B MRT-3 rehabilitation project

The Philippines and Japan signed an exchange of notes for the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 Rehabilitation Project (Phase III).

The agreement was signed today by Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya and Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Secretary Maria Theresa P. Lazaro.

Under the agreement, Japan will provide a loan to the Philippines for the rehabilitation of MRT Line 3, which has experienced a series of operational issues.

The loan has a ceiling of 21.6 billion yen, equivalent to more than ₱8 billion.

Through the rehabilitation project, the government aims to improve train safety and passenger comfort, encourage greater use of the railway system, and help address Metro Manila’s worsening traffic congestion.
