Thirteen social media influencers and political vloggers have filed a petition before the Supreme Court, challenging the House of Representatives’ investigation into fake news and disinformation.
The petitioners argue that Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers’ statements during the probe violate constitutional rights by restricting freedom of speech.
They are seeking a temporary restraining order and a writ of prohibitory injunction against House Speaker Martin Romualdez, Rep. Barbers, and members of three House committees involved in the inquiry.
Despite the petition, Rep. Dan Fernandez, overall chair of the Tri-Committee, asserted that the investigation will continue. He emphasized that fake news-related activities contribute to what he calls the “weaponization of social media.”
The Supreme Court has yet to issue a decision on the matter.
