Greenpeace Philippines insists ASEAN Summit protest was peaceful

Greenpeace Philippines continues to call for the immediate release of its Filipino activist members who were arrested following a protest held during the ongoing ASEAN Summit 2026 in Lapu-Lapu City.

The group said it was urging ASEAN leaders to address the plastic and waste crisis and hold corporations accountable for environmental damage.

Greenpeace Philippines is also calling for an end to fossil fuel dependence.

According to the organization, the real danger is not peaceful activism but a system that allows corporations to flood the region with single-use plastics while communities bear the impact on health, livelihood, and lives.

In an interview with Brigada News FM Manila, Greenpeace Philippines Zero Waste Campaigner Marian Ledesma maintained that their protest was peaceful.

She said the group stayed outside the summit venue and had no intention of entering the area.

Ledesma added that only four individuals were present and they were carrying only banners.

Despite this, and despite speaking with police officers, authorities still decided to bring the activists to the police station.

Ledesma stressed that their only intention was to stage a peaceful protest to convey their advocacy.
