A 16-year-old Grade 10 student died after being struck by lightning while on a beach picnic with friends in Barangay Daanlungsod, Tuburan, Cebu, on Thursday afternoon.
The victim was identified as Alias Fernan, 16. Another minor, identified only as Jarrie, 14, was injured in the incident and remains under medical observation.
The lightning strike occurred at around 3 p.m. in Purok Santan, Barangay Daanlungsod, where the two minors were spending time with several friends.
According to the initial police investigation and the statement of the victim’s girlfriend, identified as Alias Lyn, the group was having a picnic along the shoreline when lightning suddenly struck Fernan and Jarrie.
Both victims were immediately rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Fernan was declared dead on arrival by attending medical personnel.
Jarrie survived the incident and was reported to be conscious. Authorities said the 14-year-old remains confined in the hospital for further observation and treatment.
Police continue to document the circumstances surrounding the incident based on witness accounts and their initial investigation.
