Retrieval operations continued after five alleged treasure hunters were trapped inside a tunnel in Upper Licanan, Panabo City, Davao del Norte
According to the Panabo City Information Office, two victims, both aged 59, have already been recovered. Authorities are still searching for the remaining three individuals believed to be trapped inside the tunnel.
Responders encountered difficulties during the operation due to the presence of hazardous gases inside the tunnel. Air monitoring devices detected ammonia and carbon monoxide, posing risks to both trapped individuals and rescue personnel.
The incident occurred in a tunnel located in Purok 5, Barangay Upper Licanan. Authorities said the initial search and rescue efforts were shifted to retrieval operations because of the victims’ condition and the dangers associated with confined spaces.

The retrieval operation is being led by the Panabo City Fire District, with support from fire districts in Davao del Norte and Davao City, along with the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office and other responding agencies.
