DSWD strengthens water, food security efforts amid Super El Niño threat

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is ramping up its preparations for the possible impact of Super El Niño, with a focus on securing water access and food supplies for vulnerable communities.

According to DSWD Spokesperson and Disaster Response Management Group Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, the agency is implementing programs such as Project LAWA or Local Adaptation to Water Access and BINHI or Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished.

The initiatives are designed to improve access to water and food, while helping vulnerable sectors and communities prepare for the possible effects of prolonged drought.

The DSWD has so far established 5,311 LAWA sites nationwide, including farm reservoirs, irrigation facilities, and rehabilitated waterways.

The agency is also taking steps to protect its food stocks from extreme heat by closely monitoring temperatures inside its warehouses.

Large industrial ceiling fans are likewise being installed to help maintain proper storage conditions and prevent family food packs from being compromised by high temperatures.
