One worker was killed and three others were injured when an elevator core wall collapsed at a construction site in Bonifacio Global City (BGC), Taguig, on Monday, October 20, prompting the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to launch an investigation.
Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said the DOLE–National Capital Region office has already started an occupational safety and health (OSH) probe to identify possible violations and determine whether a Work Stoppage Order should be issued against the contractor.
He added that DOLE is now coordinating with the victims’ families to ensure they receive all benefits and assistance due to them.
The agency will also provide access to other DOLE programs to help the bereaved family and injured workers recover, Laguesma said,
He expressed concern over the recurring workplace accidents despite constant reminders to employers to observe strict OSH compliance.
Laguesma also emphasized that while DOLE enforces safety rules, employers must take primary responsibility for protecting their workers.
Meanwhile, the Labor chief vowed to tighten monitoring and enforcement measures nationwide to prevent similar incidents, reaffirming DOLE’s commitment to workplace safety and accountability.*
