Davao-based influencer Tor Bagtik slammed for offensive remarks on Lumad

Davao-based vlogger Tor Bagtik is facing backlash after making offensive remarks about Lumad elders in a recent video, prompting strong condemnation from indigenous groups.

The United Moro and Indigenous People Movement (UMIP) denounced Bagtik’s statements, particularly his use of the phrase “looy na lood” (pitiful and disgusting) to describe Ata tribe members. The group emphasized that such language promotes discrimination and goes against Davao City’s values of inclusivity and respect.

“Davao has always been a city of fairness and unity,” UMIP said. “Any form of discrimination, especially against our indigenous elders, is an insult to the harmonious coexistence we have built over generations.”

Following the backlash, Bagtik issued a public apology on March 4, acknowledging his mistake.

“I had no intention other than to entertain, but I made an error in my words,” he said. “I understand your feelings. I was wrong in my actions.”

Despite the apology, UMIP stressed that social media content should never come at the expense of another person’s dignity. The group urged Davaoeños to uphold cultural sensitivity online and offline.

As Davao continues to showcase its rich cultures globally under the leadership of Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte, UMIP called for responsible content creation that promotes understanding rather than division.
