Comelec ruling on campaign donations received by Escudero may be released soon

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may release its ruling at any moment on the legality of the ₱30-million donation made by a contractor to Senator Chiz Escudero’s 2022 campaign.

According to Comelec Chair George Garcia, the case has already been submitted for resolution, and the ruling is expected to come out “any moment now.”

Garcia explained that while there are 27 other contractors who donated to various candidates during the 2022 elections, Escudero’s case moved faster because both the senator and Lawrence Lubiano—the president of Centerways Construction and Development Inc.—admitted to the contribution.

He noted that with both the donor and recipient confirming the donation, there was no longer a need to establish factual evidence.

Meanwhile, the 27 contractors have until November 21 to respond to the Comelec’s show cause order.
