Clash in Negros Occidental leaves seven NPA members dead

Seven suspected remnants of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed in an early morning clash with government forces in Barangay Gatuslao, Candoni, Negros Occidental, on Thursday.

According to Lt. Col. J-Jay Javines of the 3rd Infantry Division, soldiers engaged about 10 rebels in a firefight lasting approximately 45 minutes. The encounter also led to the recovery of high-powered firearms, grenades, and ammunition.

The operation reportedly targeted members of the dismantled Southwest Front of the NPA’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor, accused of trying to reestablish their influence in the area. Javines stated the group was involved in various illegal activities, including extortion and recruitment. However, the military has yet to confirm the identities of the deceased rebels, adding to the ongoing investigation.

This incident marks another significant blow to the NPA in the region, following a series of military offensives aimed at neutralizing insurgent remnants. While government forces reported no casualties, the event has sparked renewed calls for heightened efforts to end insurgency in Negros.
