China breaks silence: No asylum offer for Rodrigo Duterte as former Philippine leader faces international arrest warrant

China firmly denied reports on Monday that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte and his family sought asylum in the country. The statement follows speculation surrounding Duterte’s recent trip to Hong Kong, which coincided with an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, Guo Jiakun, stated that Beijing never received any asylum request from Duterte. He described the former leader’s visit as a private holiday and dismissed claims of a political motive behind the trip.

Duterte Arrested After Hong Kong Trip

Duterte traveled to Hong Kong on March 7 to attend an event for Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs). On the same day, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber I issued an arrest warrant against him.

Upon returning to the Philippines on March 11, Duterte was taken into custody at Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Authorities have not yet disclosed further details regarding his legal proceedings.

Duterte, known for his controversial war on drugs during his presidency, has faced international scrutiny for alleged human rights violations. The ICC has been investigating him for potential crimes against humanity, further intensifying the legal battle surrounding his administration.

While China’s response puts an end to asylum rumors, questions remain about Duterte’s next legal moves as he faces mounting pressure from international authorities.
