Chaos in Albuera: Molotov attack hits Vince Rama HQ just a day after rival Kerwin Espinosa survives deadly ambush

The 2025 local elections in Albuera, Leyte have taken a violent turn. Just one day after mayoral candidate Kerwin Espinosa survived a gun attack during a campaign rally, another alarming incident has shaken the town.

On Friday morning, April 11, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at the headquarters of the Albuera Development Team (ADT), the campaign group of mayoral candidate Vince Rama. The window of the structure was also smashed. A staff member discovered the damage shortly after 5 a.m.

Authorities confirmed that no one was injured during the early morning attack. However, it marks the third politically charged act of violence in the town in just two months.

Vince Rama’s Headquarters Attacked After Espinosa Shooting

The incident came only a day after Espinosa, a self-confessed drug lord turned candidate, was shot while campaigning in Barangay Tinag-an. In a Facebook Live session around midnight, Espinosa said he was hit near the heart but was now in stable condition.

He also claimed the gunman behind the ambush had already been arrested, though police have yet to confirm this detail. Espinosa suggested that his shooting was connected to criminal elements who feared losing their operations if he won.

He stated that there are individuals who fear their illegal business will collapse if he becomes mayor. Espinosa has made clear his campaign will focus on eliminating illegal drugs and corruption in Albuera.

His sibling and a minor were also injured in the attack but are now recovering, according to local police.

Rama Calls for Prayer, Decries Violence

Despite being political rivals, Rama led a 30-second moment of silence and prayer during a campaign rally for senatorial candidate Rodante “Dante” Marcoleta in Ormoc City. He expressed concern over Espinosa’s condition and urged supporters to choose compassion over hostility.

Tensions have been rising in Albuera since February, when a grenade was thrown at the home of reelectionist Mayor Sixto Dela Victoria. No suspects have been named in that case either.

The police assured the public that all incidents are being thoroughly investigated. Authorities said they are taking every step to ensure peace and security during the election period.

Meanwhile, Espinosa has formally requested security support from the Commission on Elections and called on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to address the escalating violence. He stressed the need to protect his family and his entire campaign slate.

As tensions boil over, residents in Albuera are left wondering whether the path to leadership in their town must be paved with fear. The Commission on Elections has not yet issued an official statement on the latest attacks, but pressure continues to mount as election day draws near.
