The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has expressed opposition to the call for snap elections amid ongoing controversies surrounding the flood control project scandal and alleged coup rumors.
It can be recalled that over the weekend, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano suggested that all government officials should resign and pave the way for a snap election.
In an article published by the CBCP, CBCP President Cardinal Pablo David said that such a call is not the right way to address irregularities in government.
In one of his homilies, the Cardinal explained that when a child becomes dirty, one cleans and washes the child, not throws the child away — drawing a parallel to how the government should be treated.
He stressed that even if the government fails its people, it should not be discarded, but rather reformed.
Cardinal David emphasized that the solution lies not in a coup, a revolutionary government, military rule, or snap elections — but in holding plunderers accountable and ensuring they face long-term imprisonment for their crimes.
