Cameron Diaz teases ‘The Mask’ sequel with Jim Carrey—but studio must pay $100M first

Cameron Diaz has sent shockwaves through Hollywood by revealing she would consider reprising her iconic role in The Mask—but only if Jim Carrey is on board. The Back in Action star, 52, admitted that a potential sequel to the 1994 blockbuster hit could happen under the right circumstances, but there’s a hefty price tag attached.

“If Jim [Carrey]’s on board, I’ve been riding those coat-tails from day one,” Diaz told Access Hollywood.

The revelation has sparked excitement among fans, as the original film remains one of the most beloved comedies of the ‘90s. However, studios looking to bring back the dynamic duo of Carrey and Diaz will need to shell out at least $100 million to secure the A-listers.

Hollywood’s $100 million price tag for ‘The Mask 2’

Diaz, who took an 11-year break from acting, recently returned to the screen in Netflix’s Back in Action alongside Jamie Foxx. Her return has fueled speculation about possible sequels to her past hit films, and The Mask is now at the top of the list.

According to industry insiders, both Diaz and Carrey command massive salaries, and reviving the franchise would require a major financial commitment from studios.

“The Mask was Cameron’s breakout role,” a source said. “If she and Jim are going to reunite, the payday has to match their star power.”

The original film, which grossed over $350 million worldwide, introduced Diaz as sultry nightclub singer Tina Carlyle, opposite Carrey’s over-the-top superhero alter ego. The chemistry between the two was undeniable, and fans have long hoped for a follow-up.

Will Jim Carrey say yes?

While Diaz seems open to a return, Carrey’s involvement remains the biggest question mark. The 62-year-old comedian has previously expressed reluctance about revisiting past roles, famously turning down multiple sequel offers, including The Mask 2 in the early 2000s.

Carrey last reprised one of his famous characters in 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To, but since then, he has focused on art, selective film projects, and personal endeavors.

“I don’t really have an appetite for playing characters that I’ve done over and over again,” Carrey previously said.

Still, with Diaz now back in the industry and the nostalgia-fueled Hollywood trend stronger than ever, fans are holding out hope that Carrey might reconsider.

Will ‘The Mask 2’ happen?

For now, The Mask 2 remains just an idea, but with Diaz’s interest and the right financial backing, the long-awaited sequel could finally take shape. Whether Carrey agrees to return or not, one thing is certain—the studio will need deep pockets to make it happen.
