A newly constructed bridge in Barangay Alibago, Enrile, Cagayan, collapsed before it could even be used, prompting local officials to demand answers. Enrile Mayor Miguel Decena Jr. called for an immediate meeting with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Region 2’s 3rd District Engineering Office to assess the safety of the structure, which also shows cracks in its foundation.
In a Facebook live broadcast, Mayor Decena revealed he had previously filed a case against the bridge project, but it was dismissed. He is now requesting a copy of the feasibility study and detailed engineering design for transparency. Adding fuel to the controversy, a Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) sign near the site clearly designates the area as a “no-build zone,” raising questions about why the project proceeded.
To safeguard motorists, the mayor ordered the installation of warning and detour signs, directing traffic to a nearby service road. The DPWH has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the public awaits an explanation as concerns grow over accountability and the potential risk to future infrastructure projects in the region.
